LANGUAGE ARTS SYLLABUS- WEEK OF 12/1

WELCOME BACK!

Announcements:
  • Monday, 12/1: New Beginnings (1st day of 2nd trimester)
  • Report Cards go home Friday, 12/12. My grades will be updated by Friday, 12/5 if you wish to check your final grades before this.
  • Absent last Tuesday? You must make up punctuation pre-test Monday (in class) or Tuesday at lunch. All post-tests will be returned by Wednesday. All graded final writing workshop assignments will be returned by Thursday.
  • Friday, 12/5: Group Picture Day
  • Study Session – Thursday @ 8:20 A.M. Pick up pass from back table. Focus: Review for Vocabulary Quiz #6.
  • My Advisory (Adopt-A-Family Due Date Reminders): All wrapped, labeled gifts by Thursday, 12/11. Monetary contributions are due by Monday, 12/8. Thanks!
  • Core Extension Reminder: You will report to your first CE teacher for a 12 day rotation.

Monday:
  • New novel assignment: For December/January book report, you will be asked to find a novel (genre: your choice). The novel must not be a movie. You MUST show me your book for approval by Monday, 12/8. The book report format options will be distributed on that date.
  • Vocabulary Lesson #6 (words with Greek suffixes) Homework is due Wednesday (write each word 5 times each and write a clear definition. Five times each must be handwritten.

Tuesday:
  • Begin Oral Traditions Unit. We will begin with folk tales. Discuss characteristics.
  • Read and discuss “Storyteller-Past and Present” and “The People Could Fly,” and African-American folk tale by Virginia Hamilton.

Wednesday:
  • Vocabulary homework is due. Check in for points and review.
  • Read and discuss the Japanese folk tale “Gombei and the Wild Ducks.”

Thursday:
  • Vocabulary quiz #6
  • Writing Workshop

Friday:
  • Mini-lesson: Onomatopoeia and personification
  • Writing Workshop
