LA SYLLABUS - WEEK OF JANARY 11, 2010

Announcements:
  • 7th grade honor roll breakfast is Tuesday at 8:00 A.M.
  • Writing Celebration Contest (optional) – Entry is due by January 19th. Here are the requirements:
  • Prose or poetry
  • Typed / size 12 font/ double-spaced / max length is 6 pages
  • Cover page includes the following: title, your name, grade 7, PJMS – Santos, category (prose or poetry)
  • Advisory: The Chicago Coalition for the homeless needs your help. They are in desperate need of blankets(both old and new) for their many shelters. There will be a blanket drive between January 11 January 21st. The advisory with the most blankets will win a pizza party.
  • Expository essays and outlines are due on the following dates:
6th and 7th period: Tuesday, January 12th
1st and 2nd period: Friday, January 15th

Monday:
  • In-class: Grammar/Writing lesson: transition words, expanding sentences, and improving sentences. After the class exercises, see how you can apply these lessons to your expository essay.
  • Extended 6th and 7th period: Writing Workshop

Tuesday:
  • In-class: Grammar/Writing lesson: combining sentence parts; using who, that, and which.
  • Extended 6th and 7th period: Share and collect expository essays and outlines.
  • Extended 6th and 7th period: Writing Workshop

Wednesday: 7-2 field trip to Chicago Wolves game

Thursday:
  • Assign a copy of Flowers for Algernon by Daniel Keyes. You will also receive a student packet of exercises related to the novel. You are not required to do anything in the packet yet. The syllabus each week will detail the upcoming due dates in your packet and required reading.
Expectations:
  • Please bring the novel and packet to class every day.
  • Keep up with the reading; you will be given a quiz on the assigned reading. See below.
  • Be an active participant in class discussion.

Extended 1st and 2nd period: Writing Workshop

Friday:
  • In-class: Complete pg. 3 in novel packet and discuss.
  • SSR
  • Extended 1st and 2nd period: Share and collect expository essays and outlines.
  • Extended 1st and 2nd period: Writing Workshop
