LA SYLLABUS - WEEK OF NOVEMBER 30, 2009

Announcements:
  • Ms. Santos’s and Ms. Gunnell’s advisories (Adopt-A-Family). Please remember the following due dates regarding this community service activity:
  1. Commitment form was due Monday, November 23rd. You can still submit if you can participate.
  2. Monetary contributions are due by Monday, December 7th.
  3. Wrapped, labeled gifts are due by Thursday, December 10th.
  • Trimester 2 begins November 30th.
  • You should have checked in your self-selected (science fiction or fantasy) novel by Tuesday, November 24th. You should be in the process of reading your novel. An extra copy of the book report format has also been posted on my blog. The book report presentations may be done the week of December 14th or the week of January 4th.
  • Study session is this Wednesday immediately after school until 4:15. Students who wish to review for Thursday’s vocabulary quiz should plan on attending.
  • Group yearbook pictures are scheduled for Friday, December 4th.

Monday
Vocabulary Lesson #1 (words from our current stories). Homework (due Tuesday):
  1. Write each word 5 times.
  2. Write a clear definition.
  3. Use each word in an original sentence.

Extended 6th and 7th period – Writing Workshop

Tuesday
  • Collect vocabulary homework.
  • In-class: Read and discuss “The Fun They Had” by Isaac Asimov.
  • Homework (due Wednesday): Read “All Summer in a Day” by Ray Bradbury (pages 489-494 in blue book). Write clear, detailed response (2-5 sentences) for the following questions (page 495 #4, 5, 6).
Extended 6th and 7th period: Writing Workshop

Wednesday:
  • Collect and discuss homework.
  • Return vocabulary homework and review for Thursday’s quiz.

Thursday:
  • Vocabulary Quiz #1 (You need to be familiar with spelling and meaning of words).
  • SSR (silent sustained reading)
Extended 1st and 2nd period: Writing Workshop

Friday:
  • In-class: Read and discuss “Hail and Farewell” by Ray Bradbury.
