NEW BOOK REPORT FORMAT

Genre: Science Fiction or Fantasy

Directions: After you have read your novel, you must select one of the options below. To receive credit for this assignment, it will be necessary to follow all the directions for the specific option. For options A, B, and D an essay is required. Please note the following criteria:

  • Proper heading
  • Four to five, well-organized paragraphs (Use transitions words where needed.)
  • Typed, double-spaced, size 12 font, and standard font style
  • Author
  • Title
  • Genre
  • Number of pages
  • Reasonably detailed plot summary
  • Theme
  • Personal observations/reflections

For option C, the information in the last 7 items above should be included in your presentation.

Option A-Poster: On a piece of poster board 14x22 (this is ½ of a standard size sheet of poster board) affix a typed essay with the required information listed above. Around the essay, place visuals that are related to the novel (picture of author, symbols, drawings, graphics, etc.) Finally, affix a brief, typed caption for each visual that explains its significance. The visuals must be trimmed and neatly attached with a glue stick.

Option B-Work of Art: Using your novel as inspiration, create a work of art in water color or acrylic paint. (No works of art will be accepted in pen, marker, crayon, etc.) Your work of art will depict a scene or character from the novel. This work of art must be framed (inexpensive frames can be purchased for as little as a dollar or you can make your own sturdy frame.) On the back of the painting, be sure to include your name, period, author, and title of the novel. Also, submit the required essay as explained above. On the back of your painting, include a typed paragraph (150 words) that clearly explains the art’s connection to your novel.

Option C-Monologue: Pretend you are one of the characters in the novel. Through your dramatization, the audience should understand your role in the novel, your relationship with other characters, where you are from, and what happened to you throughout the novel. You should not use note cards. Props and costumes are encouraged, if applicable. Time: 2-2 ½ minutes [Final Note: Do NOT select this option if you did the character monologue last month.]

Option D: Select an important scene from your novel and make a diorama. Be sure to cover any advertisements on the shoe box. On the top of the box, include a 150 word typed description of your diorama. Explain why you selected this scene. (Why is this an important scene in the novel? Does it capture a certain feeling or theme? Explain with specific details.) On one side of the box, affix a typed caption that includes the novel’s title, authors, your name, and class period. Also, submit the required essay as explained above.

Option E-Design Your Own: This option will enable you to create your own book report assignment. However, Design Your Own assignments must receive my approval before you begin. To receive approval, submit your written, detailed plan to the “Dear Mrs. Santos” folder. No oral explanations will be accepted. Submit your proposal by Monday, February 2, 2009.
