Creative Writing Assignment - Literature Based

Directions: Select (1) of the following options based on recent literature we have read and discussed.

Points: 30

Due Date: by Wednesday 9/24

Option A (based on “Casey at the Bat” pages 142-144)

Write the next 4 stanzas based on what you believe happens after Casey strikes out. Be sure to use rhythm and end rhyme comparable to Thayer’s poem (rhyme scheme should be aabb). Use imagery. Challenge: Use one example of hyperbole (or exaggeration/bold statement) in your poem.

(4 stanzas minimum/single space within stanzas/double space between stanzas/ typed)

Option B (based on “What I Want to be When I Grow Up” pages 323-327)

Mrs. Blahuta claims that teenagers are inconsiderate and selfish. Write an editorial that supports or refutes her opinion. Use specific examples and details to defend your opinion.

(Minimum 4 paragraphs, typed, double-spaced)

Option C (based on “A Crush” pages 16-22)

Everyone in town is curious about Dolores’s tattoo. Write a short story that shows how, when, where, and why she got her coyote tattoo. You may use 1st person or 3rd person point of view. Use imagery. Challenge: Use dialogue. Remember to use quotation marks correctly and make a new paragraph every time the speaker changes. Use the stories we have studied as an example of how to properly punctuate and make paragraphs when using dialogue.

Option D (based on “The War of the Wall pages 84-90)

The “flags of liberation” that the painter lady includes in her mural are depictions of the African-American flag. Its colors represent the blood (red), the race (black), and the hopes (green) of African Americans. On a blank sheet of unlined paper design a flag for your community, school, or family. The design must be colored. On a separate sheet of paper, explain the symbolism in your flag. What do the colors represent? Explain the symbolism of images you have included in your flag.
