SYLLABUS - WEEK OF NOVEMBER 12, 2007

ANNOUNCEMENTS:
  • Community Service Projects through advisory:
1. Pennies for Pearl Harbor
2 Box Tops for Education (will go towards front lawn of school)
3. Used Coat Drive
  • · LA study session has been moved from Friday morning to Tuesday 3:40 – 4:15 P.M. in order to review for the grammar test.
  • · Study the following grammar book pages, in addition to your “class notes” (diagrams from class practice): Pgs. 276-278. Other helpful pages: 10, 12, and 21.
  • · Remember to go to my website (see above) and vote for one or more of the student-generated titles that you think would be better than the original My Brother Sam is Dead. Polls close in two days.
  • · Last day of the trimester: November 20th.
  • · New book report assignment was assigned last week. Students should check in a novel by Monday, 11/12. Genre: student choice. Book report is due the week of 12/10.

Monday:

  • · Journal
  • · If you were absent on Friday, you will make up vocabulary test in class today.
  • · 1st and 2nd period only: Discuss “Immigrant Kids.”
  • · Extended 6th and 7th period only: Review for Wednesday’s grammar test and begin reading excerpt from “Exploring the Titanic.”

Tuesday:

  • · LA Trivia
  • · Return last Friday’s vocabulary test.
  • · 6th and 7th period (in class): Finish reading and discussing “Exploring the Titanic.”
  • · Extended 1st and 2nd period: Review for Wednesday’s grammar test.

Wednesday:

  • · Journal
  • · Grammar Test
  • · Begin reading and discussing Rudyard Kipling’s “Rikki-Tikki-Tavi” in class.

Thursday:

  • LA Trivia
  • · Finish reading and discussing “Rikki-Tikki-Tavi” in class.
  • · Return final novel assignment grades.
  • Extended 6th and 7th period: Brainstorm controversial topics at the local, national, and global level (these will be used as topics for next assignment).
Friday:
  • · Distribute “Word Power” Bingo List. These words will be used in our bingo game next week and will be the last opportunity for earning extra credit.
  • · Workshop: Come prepared to read your self-selected novel, study word power bingo list, extra journal writing and sharing, or check out great student writing (final novel assignments) on display.
  • Extended 1st and 2nd period: Brainstorm controversial topics at the local, national, and global level (these will be used as topics for next assignment).
